The authors of Raising America: Building a More Perfect Union asked me to design the layout and cover for their book. Click here to see a PDF version.
About the cover: When thinking about the possible designs that could relate to the title and content of the book, incorporating our flag, the best visual/symbol of America, was my first idea. Later the idea of turning the flag into building blocks came. From there, I had to figure out how it would be built. That “construction” led me to the cranes. You can click on the left thumbnail image of the cover to get a bigger/better view of the end result (see an animated version of the cover).
Special visual to note: To further connect the book cover to its content, each book section had an image of the building-block flag at different points in its construction. As the reader progressed through the book, learning how to build a more perfect union, the block flag image built as well, so by the last section of the book, the flag was completed (click on the right thumbnail image/GIF to see how it worked).
Software used:
- Book’s cover and graphics created in Illustrator
- Book layout done in InDesign
After creating the double exposure of the man, I decided to design a fictional advertisement to put it to use. I came up with the premise of the ad, found an appropriate quote, created the hashtag, and found a real nonprofit organization that would potentially run such an ad.
